friday five :: what is ...

A fun one from Kristine:

What’s something you were into before it became popular?
Harry Potter, I think, because my friend Elena worked on the first book when she worked at Scholastic and encouraged me to read it. So I bought it when there were only a couple of copies on the shelf in the children's section (under "R" for Rowling!), not piles and piles of them on tables at the front of the store. Elena was right, of course — I was hooked from page 1!

What’s something you were reluctant to jump on the bandwagon with, but now are totally into?
My digital camera. It took me a while to get one, but now I can't imagine life without it.

What’s a current trend or fad you just don’t get?
iPods. I wasn't into Walkmans, and I'm not into the latest incarnation of listening to music through earplugs whilst on the go. I am perfectly happy with my CDs and my CD players!

If you could turn any current fondness of yours into a popular trend, what would it be?
Comfortable shoes! Why couldn't Carrie Bradshaw champion Danskos instead of Manolo Blahniks on Sex and the City?!

What’s something that’s totally uncool that you love anyway?
Hmm ... how do you define uncool? What's cool to me is probably very uncool to others (like comfortable shoes!), and vice versa. But for the sake of answering the question, I'll say ... Harlequin romances. :)

Oh, that shoe answer is a good one! I love a sexy stiletto, but my feet don't... :(

Here's Susanne's answers:

That's a tough one; I tend to be a follower when it comes to trends. Led Zeppelin had a revival of popularity in the late 1980's; I was pretty into them shortly before this revival occurred.

What’s something you were reluctant to jump on the bandwagon with, but now are totally into? Compact disks. I received a CD player in the early nineties as a gift, and was blown away by how easy and user friendly everything was.

What’s a current trend or fad you just don’t get?
Talking on a cell phone practically 24/7. I have a cell, and love it! But I can't talk while I'm doing other things, even simple things. I have to wait until I'm not busy before I make a call.

If you could turn any current fondness of yours into a popular trend, what would it be?
Modest gymnastics and ice-skating leotards. Seriously - I'm not saying this from a moral point of view - I honestly think women (girls) look more aesthetic when their crotch and buttocks are more covered; it contures with their figure better. Skimpy attire should be reserved for the beach or pool.

What’s something that’s totally uncool that you love anyway?
Lawrence Welk and John Denver. Of course, I've always loved polka, which influences my love of Lawrence Welk.

I haven't purchased an iPod yet either. Shocking, isn't it?

Bowling. If poker can be played on sports channels (it's about as exciting as watching paint dry to me), why not bowling? It would be incredibly easy to make it work. Crazy lighting, retro bands, girls with tattoos (but not too many), etc. You'd have to force the bowlers to dress cooler too, but advance payments could fix that.

If I could lock Em and Ray into a room with me and my iPod for just 10 minutes, I'd make believers out of them. Tee hee.

Sorry for being a tease, but I REALLY need more blog readership! It encourages me.

Two things:
First: Music labels out of clubs in Ibiza, Spain. That's where mellow, electronic "chillout" and "trance" music you hear in all those trendy martini bars started. But back in the mid-90s when I was into it after I got home from a European study abroad, anything out of Ibiza was stuffed into the corner of a music store in some obscure category.
Second: Another music label I fell in love with while on the above-mentioned study abroad is out of a nighclub in Berlin called Tresor. The club is now closed, but it opened right after the wall came down and brought in the world's best techno artists. Again...obscure. There are at least two dozen compilations that came out of there and I should have picked up years ago because now I can't even get them on backorder.

What’s something you were reluctant to jump on the bandwagon with, but now are totally into?
Cell phones, but now I can't live without mine.

What’s a current trend or fad you just don’t get?
Skirts and leggings. Tights are great, but the leggings? It's just too much.

If you could turn any current fondness of yours into a popular trend, what would it be?
The new Nancy Drew movie that's coming out is already doing it for me!!

What’s something that’s totally uncool that you love anyway?
POLKA!!

Jo on the Go: Well, I just purchased a big geeked-out digital SLR, with two lenses, so my consumer electronic needs are all taken care of this year (and yet the shots I take with a cheap, low-tech cameraphone still get more hits at flickr). What I really want, though, is a house-cleaning robot.

Ellen, if looks like we have a love for Polka in common! Must be our German roots.

Em, I remember when you used to read all those Harlequin romances when you were in 7th grade or so.
