that minnesota institution

There's nothing like the Minnesota State Fair to take a gal's mind off her cancer. Liz and I took Daniel this morning and had a good time looking at photographs in the Fine Arts building, petting horses, looking at other farm animals and just walking around. And of course, we ate. Here's what we consumed, in order:
• Mini donuts.
• The new Cool-Aid pickle-on-a-stick. (I loved it ... I ate mine and half of Liz's.)
• A corn dog (with sweet tea for me).
• Sweet Martha's cookies. (I think it was the highlight of Daniel's State Fair experience.)
• A fruit pie, so I could get something healthy into Daniel's stomach.
• Cheese curds.

Sweet tea (iced, I'm guessing) is served in Minnesota? Who knew? Or are you talking Lipton?

Oh, I miss the Fair! For us, we always need mini-donuts and pronto pups.

Were you guys there in the morning for the Great Bull Stampede? Spain has nothing on us. You want to run with the bulls, (well, one bull anyway) just come the the Great Minnesota Get Together! The whole thing went down around 9:30 am. Apparently a certain bull became quite angry during his transport from farm to fair and escaped his handlers before they could get him safely into the barn. Maybe he wanted his share of cheese curds just like everyone else. Anyway, he proceeded to run wildly through the terrified crowd. He didn't stomp on anyone though, and killed himself in a most grisly way (he ran straight into a fire hydrant) before getting any cheese curds, or mini donuts, or anything. The fire hydrant was fine, by the way.

I know all the details because my intrepid photojournalist husband was working the fair that morning and got the first footage of the aftermath: some tufts of hair on the fire hydrant, etc. As he said, to sum up the experience, "Beef. It's what's for dinner tonight."

We too were roaming...or should I say grazing at the fair. Missed the stampede, but had a great time.

I had heard about the pickle, but was unsure just where to find it. I am glad you enjoyed it!

But...sweet tea? Would love it...but never ever have seen it in MN. You must find all of the great things...

I've been thinking about you a lot, Emilie. I'm so glad to read that you were out at the fair having a bit of fun! Sean, Kate, and I are heading to the fair today - it'll be our first time experiencing it! I'm going to look for the mini donuts and possibly the pickle-on-a-stick...sounds intriguing!

PS I'm so glad you got a chance to go to the Fair! And eat some highly nutritious food, too. I'm trying to decide from the pics who seems to be enjoying themselves more--Liz or Daniel. :)

Just got home tonight and got your e-mail. Please know that Brian and I will be keeping you, Steve, and Daniel in our prayers every day.

Much love,

I love the fair!! My new food this year was the veggie fries - they have been there forever but I never tried them. Yumm :)

Booooo - I'm so sad we missed the fair. Although the NM fair does have some pretty spectacular food, there is nothing on sticks. (Really, though? Kool-Aid pickles? Hmmm...) ;)

THAT DOG LIZ IS HOLDING LOOKS TASTIER THAN ANY OF GROSS, OVERPRICED FAIR FOOD WE HAD AT THE OREGON STATE FAIR ON SEPT 26.

BOY, DANEIL'S LOOKING BIGGER AND BIGGER!

I LOVE CHEESE CURDS! Whenever someone brings some back to Oregon from a visit over there, I always end up eating most of the package. They're a bit more difficult to find here, although I'm sure I could if I tried. Your little unborn must have been bouncing off the walls (or uterine lining) after all that sugar!! Lucky Daniel too, mom is so generous :-)
