the beginning of the end of summer

This week has given me that feeling I get when I see the first leaf fall from the tree. The weather has cooled off a bit, from muggy to blue-sky glorious. The first fall L.L. Bean catalog arrived in the mail. And on Tuesday, we said goodbye to our summer nanny, Kiersten, who started medical school orientation the next day. I've chosen not to blog too much about our nannies here, so I won't say anything more except that we loved her and will really miss her. Our new nanny, Anna, started on Wednesday, and we like her, too. Interesting how the change from summer nanny to fall-and-beyond nanny has felt like such a big transition — not just in people, but in seasons. Before I know it, I will be pulling out the fall sweaters and wearing socks again.

I feel so bittersweet when I notice the days getting shorter, and when I hear those locusts (or cicadas, or whatever they are) that sing in the trees when fall comes. Even though fall is my favorite season, it still makes a a little sad that summer is winding down.

New reader here. Our nanny left today too to go back to New Zealand after a year and a half. We still have summer here so no transition until September but still it is hard to say goodbye to someone we will really miss.

I know exactly what you mean. Today, I felt a slight chill in the air and it depressed me. Summer's end means back to work for me and an end of together-days with Keifer. :( It seems like summer just arrived.........

I am so sad to know that summer is going to end sooner than later, it's like I never got to see any of it. As much as I like Fall, I am a beach, suntan, books near the pool girl. Not so much this year and it has left me feeling sad and depressed.
Good luck with the new nanny, hope the transition continues to go well.
