Emilie’s Passing

Emile passed away in her sleep last night. I was holding her hand as she faded away. I loved her and will miss hear dearly, but I am happy to see her free of the pain and suffering. The services will be at the Basilica of St Mary on Monday, December 29th. Visitation is at 11:00 AM and mass will follow at Noon. Emile wanted me to share the following quote after she died.

"And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?

I did.

And what did you want?

To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth."

— Raymond Carver

Goodbye Emilie. I will mourn you even though we never met in person, and even though I only followed your story for a short while. You were brave and strong and touched my heart.

As for you, Steve and your children. I am very sorry for your loss: and what a big loss it is too. Take comfort from your boys: they are gifts from Emilie to you. Remember that you will never truly lose Emilie because she lives through your 2 beautiful boys. The next days, weeks and months are going to be hard and terrible, but hope is so important, and remember we as a blogging community are behind you all the way.

Sending you peaceful thoughts.

Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

Death comes in its own time, in its own way.
Death is as unique as the individual experiencing it.

My heart is broken.
It truly is.
I am comforted by the quote and have been thinking about that quote for the past few days now.
It seems incredibly fitting.

She always knew what to say. Always.

I went through my emails this morning until I found the first ones we wrote to each other. It seems ages ago. I smiled when I read it over again. I am crying now as I type.

There are people masquerading as angels on Earth and Emilie was one of them. I didn't know what it was like to know her in real life and do in fact feel cheated in some shallow way for not having had that privilege. But I guess the fact that I didn't see her or know her in real life made her a better confidant for me.

She will be missed so deeply....and my words cannot even begin to describe that.

She is up there in Heaven painting sunsets telling God about all of us. I know she is. That makes me smile.

Letter from Heaven
To my dearest family some things I'd like to say
But first of all to let you know that I arrived today,
I'm writing this from Heaven. Here I shall dwell with God above
Here, there's no more tears of sadness. Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through
God picked me up and hugged me and He said "I welcome you,
It's good to have you back again,
you were missed while you were gone,
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly, you are part of my plan
There's so much that we have to do to help our mortal man."
God gave me a fist of things that he wished for me to do
And foremost on the list was to watch and care for you
And when you lie in bed at night, the days chores put to flight
God and I are closest to you . . in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth and all those loving years
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears
But do not be afraid to cry, it does relieve the pain
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
1 wish that I could tell you all that God has planned
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand
But one thing is for certain though my life on earth is o'er
I'm closer to you now than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind
I'm walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind
And when it's time for you to go . . from that body to be free
Remember you're not going . . you're just coming here to me.

Steve,

I am very sadden to hear the lost of your wife. I had come to admire her through her writings and have been reading her blog for almost 2 years. On December 20, 2006, i lost my husband to pain and suffering.

The only comfort I have at his passing is he is no longer in pain. I find that to be very comforting. I lost my father 2 months ago.

This time of year is always going to be painful. After the death of my husband, I built a home in my hometown and moved my parents in with me. I knew Dad didn't have much longer and the only comfort Mom has is that Dad is no longer in pain and I am here with her.

I will contact you later.
Feel free to contact me because i know what it is like to loose a soul mate. Ken was not my first, i lost my first husband when i was 33 to cancer.
Another blessing you have is those wonderful boys. Sadly, I wasn't blessed with children and that makes it even harder sometimes.

I am so very very sorry. I have been reading here for a number of months and Emilie wrote so beauifully about you and your gorgeous boys. Selfishly I hope that you will leave her blog up for those of us who kenew her only from a very long distance can remember her through her words as well as in our hearts.
I share with you a poem by an Englsh poet which I found a comfort when my brother in law was taken from us also young also leaving my sister with two small boys two years ago now:

So many different lengths of time by Brian Patten
How long does a man live after all?
A thousand days or only one?
One week or a few centuries?
How long does a man spend living or dying
and what do we mean when we say gone forever?

Adrift in such preoccupations, we seek clarification.
We can go to the philosophers
but they will weary of our questions.
We can go to the priests and rabbis
but they might be busy with administrations.

So, how long does a man live after all?
And how much does he live while he lives?
We fret and ask so many questions -
then when it comes to us
the answer is so simple after all.

A man lives for as long as we carry him inside us,
for as long as we carry the harvest of his dreams,
for as long as we ourselves live,
holding memories in common, a man lives.

His lover will carry his man's scent, his touch:
his children will carry the weight of his love.
One friend will carry his arguments,
another will hum his favourite tunes,
another will still share his terrors.

And the days will pass with baffled faces,
then the weeks, then the months,
then there will be a day when no question is asked,
and the knots of grief will loosen in the stomach
and the puffed faces will calm.
And on that day he will not have ceased
but will have ceased to be separated by death.

How long does a man live after all?
A man lives so many different lengths of time.

Wishing you all well.
Woith love fromm England.

Like so many others here, I came late to know your wife, and have thought of little else in this past week. I had hoped she would live to see this Christmas, but instead, she lives somewhere else. My prayer is that you and your sons will not be left to fend for yourselves -- but, speaking as a wife and mother, I'm very sure that Emilie won't let that happen. She'll find a way to stay involved in your lives!

She was very much beloved indeed. My condolences to you and your family.

OH Steve, I am so sorry. So sorry for you and the boys and for all of us who will miss her here on earth.
I know she is with God, I know she is happy and whole, but I am sad knowing she is gone. I will miss her more than you can know.

Please know that Emilie was beloved, here on earth and forever in my heart. She was an incredible person, she was a phenomenal mother, she was a light in this world and that light is dimmer now.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

As I read your post on this Christmas morning, the tune "What a Wonderful World" came on the radio.
While you may not feel that way right now, or for some time, please know that Emilie has touched the lives of many, many people and will continue to do so long after she is gone through you and her boys.

Steve, Daniel, and Ben,
I don't know you, and I didn't know Emilie, but I've read her blog every day since discovering it (through a link from Liz H.'s blog) maybe a year and a half ago. I'm so sorry. She was a joy, and I'm glad that she knew such deep love in her too-short life. Also, I am comforted knowing that the two of you were together to the end, Steve. Please know that people you've never even heard of are holding you in their hearts. We're three of them.

Steve,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I have been following Emilie's blog since the Catholic Spirit article in 2007. While I only knew her through this blog and a couple of emails that we exchanged, I will always remember her incredible insight and kindness. As a mother of three boys, her words have come to mean a great deal to me.

My heart aches for you, Daniel, and Ben. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. Emilie has taught us so much about love and how to truly live in the moment. When the everyday annoyances of life become too much, thinking of her makes me take a step back and realize I need to appreciate what I have. She really seems to have done it so well.

Thinking of you and the boys at this very difficult time.

Emilie lived three doors down from me growing up. I remember playing with she, Mary and Suzanne in her bedroom when I was a little girl. We went through all of our school years and graduated from Sunset High School together. We had become reacquainted in the past number of months through our blogs and facebook. It has been a HUGE blessing in my life.

Emilie is without a doubt one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life. She was so intelligent and just an all-around great person. I feel blessed to have been able to call her my friend.

I know many will miss her, as will I. I am grateful for the memories I have of my times with her.

Steve, to you and the boys, I just want you to know what a great example you have been to me. Although I have never met you and only learned of you through Emilie's writings, I have seen such an incredible example of selfless service as you've loved Emilie through this difficult journey.

I will be praying for you and mourning with you.

Steve,

I most certainly will honor Em's request about the letters. I'm upset that I didn't write her back last week about it. Can you let me know if I should send it to her address, or to yours? I don't have yours.

Me: lovenewsjh@gmail.com

And because she said her pregnant friends comforted her a bit, I would love to know if she got my e-mail with the news about the birth of Desi Alexandra Love Edwards on Dec. 19.

I know you must be wondering how in the world you can cope without your soul mate, raising the boys, but I know you're going to be great.
